Mystery or Mastery: Managing Risk Through Record-Keeping, Disclosure, and Scope of Practice

Presented by Frances Schopick, JD,  MSW, LICSW, ACSW

Frances Schopick, JD, MSW is an attorney with an extensive background in Psychology and Social Work. She has served on the Faculties of the Departments of Psychiatry at both Icahn School of Medicine (formerly known as Mount Sinai School of Medicine) in NYC, and Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.

Now an attorney in WA State, Ms. Schopick represents healthcare licensees with DOH complaints, provides consultation and continuing education presentations to DOH licensees and behavioral health agencies, and consults for witness prep for deposition and trial. Presentations have been to psychologists, counselors, commissioners, magistrates, and judges. She speaks nationally for counselor and judicial conferences, State Employee Assistance Programs, and other programs on legal and mental health topics.

Frances completed her AB at Barnard College at Columbia University in New York City, her Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) at the Hunter College School of Social Work in NYC, and her Juris Doctor (JD) at the University of New Hampshire.

Women & Trauma: Best Practices & Self Care

Brooksi Bottari, MA, LMHC, CETP – Director of Military Services at Smokey Point Behavioral Hospital


Brooksi Bottari is the Director of Military Services for Smokey Point Behavioral Health Hospital and a US Army Veteran. Brooksi has an MA in Counseling Psychology from Setan Hall University and is a licensed mental health practitioner in the state of Washington. She is a Certified Expert Trauma Professional (CETP) with specializations in Military Sexual Trauma, and is a certified Compassion Fatigue trainer. She brings experience working with combat Veterans with PTSD and TBI at Wounded Warrior Project, working with homeless Veterans in downtown Seattle with severe and persistent mental illness, women and children with severe trauma histories, writing and editing, and providing a voice for the marginalized.

THIS TRAINING WILL IDENTIFY PRIMARY AND SECONDARY TRAUMA, OUTLINE THE NUANCES OF WORK WITH FEMALE CLIENTS VS. MALE CLIENTS AS WELL AS SPECIFIC CULTURAL COMPETENCIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE LGBT COMMUNITY. THE DISCUSSION WILL SHIFT TO PARALLELS IN MILITARY SEXUAL TRAUMA AND CHILDHOOD SEXUAL TRAUMA AND THE CHALLENGES OF WORKING WITH BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER. THE TRAINING WILL CONCLUDE WITH WAYS PROFESSIONALS CAN IDENTIFY THEIR OWN BOUNDARY VIOLATIONS AND AREAS OF COUNTER TRANSFERENCE IN WORKING WITH THIS POPULATION.

AN INTRODUCTION TO MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING

In this training, Lia will introduce key concepts of Motivational Interviewing (MI). We discuss the specific ways that MI can help your clients develop motivation to change problematic and risky behaviors (e.g. substance use disorders, poor eating habits, tobacco use, and treatment engagement and adherence). Strengthen your ability to motivate your clients to make and maintain positive changes. You will become familiar with the spirit, principles, and basic techniques of MI. Through interactive exercises, role-play, practice, video, and case examples, you will learn to apply MI flexibly and effectively and to make it a natural and integrated part of your clinical practice.

Lia K. Schaefer

is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist with over 6 years of clinical experience working with individuals and groups, as well as supervising student therapists to reach their full professional potential. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of California, Berkeley where she focused on juvenile justice and adult community mental health treatment. She has worked in inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment programs, community mental health centers, and primary care clinics in San Francisco’s Mission, Tenderloin, and Haight Ashbury neighborhoods. Working in these settings has afforded her the opportunity to gain experience with many evidence-based interventions for those living with multiple diagnoses and complex needs, first and foremost among them Motivational Interviewing. She receives regular training by MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers) members and is working towards MINT certification. She has enjoyed collaborating with professionals in other disciplines, including psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychologists, physicians assistants, nurses, occupational therapists, probation officers, and teachers. She is passionate about MI and is excited about sharing her knowledge and experience with you!

EATING DISORDER AND DIET CULTURE MYTHS

Clinical practitioners will leave with an increased ability to identify, assess and diagnose specific eating disorders; including identifying appropriate levels of care for treatment. It will also focus on dispelling many of the common myths about dieting, health, and disordered eating that are prevalent in our culture and how this impacts individuals seeking treatment. Clinicians will learn specific ways to address weight stigma and size bias while implementing the principles of Health at Every Size. As well as increased knowledge regarding the intersection of eating disorders and other mental health and substance abuse issues.

Maureen Peterson

is the Program Director at Center For Discovery – Tacoma Outpatient, treating adolescents, adults, and families impacted by eating disorders. Maureen is a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) and earned her BA in Psychology from Pacific Lutheran University and her MA in Counseling Psychology from Saint Martin’s University. She also completed a certificate program in The Long Term Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders through the University of Washington school of Social Work. Maureen has been working in the mental health field since 1991 and has specialized in the treatment of eating disorders since 1996. She is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Supervisor (CEDS-S) through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals.
